| Notes | Benjamin Britten wrote "Tema 'Sacher'" for cello solo as a 70th birthday tribute to Paul Sacher. The idea stemmed from <a href="/c/books/credit/567722/mstislav-rostropovich/">Mstislav Rostropovich</a> who also invited eleven other composers to write variations on Sacher's name (Conrad Beck, <a href="/c/books/credit/527722/luciano-berio/<Luciano">, </a><a href="/c/books/credit/271745/pierre-boulez/">Pierre Boulez</a>, Henri Dutilleux, <a href="/c/books/credit/490038/wolfgang-fortner/">Wolfgang Fortner</a>, Alberto Ginastera, Cristobal Halffter, <a href="/c/books/credit/488252/hans-werner-henze/">Hans Werner Henze</a>, Heinz Holliger, Klaus Huber and <a href="/c/books/credit/490042/witold-lutoslawski/">Witold Lutosławski</a>). Rostropovich first performed Britten's work at Sacher's birthday concert at the Tonhalle Zürich on 2 May 1976. It was later published by Faber Music. |
