| Notes | House of Hell is a single-player adventure gamebook written by Steve Jackson. Originally published in book form in the UK by Puffin Books in 1984, it is the tenth gamebook in the Fighting Fantasy series. A short version had previously been published in issue #3 of Warlock magazine. The book attracted controversy in the UK in 1986 when the Evangelical Alliance produced a pamphlet titled "Children at Play" which criticised the book, the Fighting Fantasy series, and the wider role-playing game phenomenon and children's literature in general. Religious organisations and parents complained about the perceived explicit nature of the horror and demonism portrayed in the book, and the end result was that Puffin Books removed an illustration from all subsequent printings (at section 264, referred to as the 'altar scene' depicting a young woman on a sacrificial altar with goat-head-masked cultist wielding a knife over her) and also reworded several related game sections. Sections leading up to the excised image were repositioned and decorated with incidental illustrations to fill the gap. When the title was published by Wizard Books in 2002 the edited version was used. However, whilst no Wizard Books printings have the original text, some printings do have the image restored, perhaps accidentally. Scholastic editions published from 2017 (featuring entirely new illustrations) restore the text to its original form. US editions (which retitle the book "House of Hades") and editions translated from the original English which used Tim Sell's artwork include the excised illustration.
