UTB stands for Uni-Taschenbücher (Uni[versity] Pocket Books). It is a joint venture of publishing houses from Germany, Austria and Switzerland to publish scientific textbooks in affordable paperback editions. In 1970 the UTB GmbH was founded with the participation of 11 specialist book publishers, the first editions were published in early 1971. Over the years, other publishers joined, others left the group (mainly due to restructuring or change of ownership).
The UTB GmbH manages distribution and marketing, the publishing activities are the sole responsibility of the respective publishing house.
