Professor of Eighteenth-Century Gender & Culture at the University of Leeds.
Her first book was on Henry James, but after moving to Leeds in 1983 her research and publications have focused on issues of gender and writing in the eighteenth century: most notably in her collection of primary documents, Women in the Eighteenth Century: Constructions of Femininity (1990); and more recently in her collection of specially commissioned essays, Women and Literature in Britain, 1700-1800 (2000).
