Jack Hutton

Jack Hutton

British publishing executive, editor and journalist. He was born in Australia but brought up in Dundee, Scotland. He started working for DC Thomson (The Hotspur, Dandy and Beano) when he was 15. He moved to London in 1954 and worked for Melody Maker as writer and layout sub-editor. He became editor in 1962. In 1970, Hutton and Melody Maker's circulation director, Peter Wilkinson, announced their departure from IPC, the paper's owners, to start a new company with financial backing from City Magazines. The first project was Sounds, a weekly paper initially devoted to progressive rock. With Wilkinson he also set up Spotlight Publications. He went on to form an alliance with publisher Morgan Grampian. Hutton supervised many publciations including Music Week, Eve, Over 21 etc. until his retirement in 1987.
