State Russian Museum, St. Petersburg

The State Russian Museum (Государственный Русский музей) in Saint Petersburg, Russia, is mainly situated in the neo-classical Mikhailovsky Palace. It holds artwork from pre-medieval period to the 20th century. It is the largest holder of Russian fine arts in Petersburg, and one of the largest museum depositories in the country. It holds many formerly private collections of avant-garde, symbolist, post-impressionist and modern works of the early 20th century that were nationalized during the October 1917 Revolution and following civil war. NB: not to be confused with The Hermitage.
