Rider is a publishing imprint of Ebury Publishing, a Penguin Random House division.
It was founded as William Rider & Son (later William Rider & Son Ltd), most likely in 1882. Specialized in in technical journals and manuals with the main focus on timber industry and forestry.
In 1908 they bought the small occult themed publisher Philip Wellby. In 1909 they famously published the Tarot card deck created by A.E. Waite and illustrator P. Colman Smith, commonly known as the "Rider-Waite-Deck", and it's companion book The Key to the Tarot.
In 1921 the company was sold to Hutchinson & Co. By the end of 1925, beginning of 1926 William Rider & Son Ltd was reorganized and renamed to Rider & Co.
In 1985, Hutchinson merged with Century to form Century Hutchinson. Rider respectively Rider Bookswas kept as an imprint.
In 1989 the company was bought and integrated into Random House UK. Hutchinson and Century became imprints of Cornerstone, Rider was assigned to Ebury.
