Sampson Low
Sampson Low is a British publishing company that was founded in 1793. In 1950 the company was taken over by Purnells and became part of the British Printing Corporation (BPC). In 1981, the media mogul Robert Maxwell bought up the parent corporation BPC and Sampson Low Ltd was systematically asset-stripped with all its publications being either sold off or closed down. After Maxwell died in 1991, his empire was declared bankrupt a year later and Sampson Low was offered for sale, but when this failed the company was wound up and deregistered in 1993. George Low, a direct descendant of the founder, re-registered the company in 1997 and began publishing again.
