Founded in Berlin by Friedrich Vieweg (1761 - 1835) as a publishing trade, moved to Braunschweig, Lower Saxony, in 1799.
He bought his father-in-law's school bookshop, a printing plant, a type foundry and a playing card factory, which he integrated into his company.
In 1825, Friedrich's oldest son Eduard (1797 - 1869) joined the company, which was renamed to Verlagsbuchhandlung Friedrich Vieweg und Sohn.
In 1841, Eduard started to spezialize the publishing program on Science, Technology and Mathematics.
After the death of Eduard's son Heinrich (1826 - 1890) his widow Helene headed the company, supported by their daughter and son-in-law, until 1909.
In 1922 the company was converted to a family shareholder company.
Bought by Pergamon Press in 1966, became part of the Verlagsgruppe Bertelsmann in 1974 and moved to Wiesbaden, Hesse.
Merged with B. G. Teubner Verlag to Vieweg & Teubner Verlag in 2008.
In 2012 merged with the technical programm of the Springer-Verlag and renamed to Springer Vieweg.
