Hans Kudlich

Hans Kudlich

Hans Kudlich, (born 25 October 1823 - died 11 November 1917) was an Austrian doctor and politician. In July 1848, he was elected as the youngest deputy in the Vienna Reichstag and in the same month he proposed the abolition of peasant subjugation. The law was eventually enacted in September 1848. From 1849 to 1853 he studied medicine in Bern and Zurich, where he passed his doctoral examination in March 1853. Because of his active participation in the Vienna October uprising of 1848 and the Palatinate uprising in 1849, he was sentenced to death and as a result he fled to the United States. In 1867, Emperor Franz Joseph pardoned him and his death sentence was lifted. He occasionally revisited his homeland, but continued to reside in the United States until his death.
