John Wiley & Sons
American publishing company, originally founded as "Charles Wiley" by Charles Wiley in 1807 in New York. Charles Wiley's son John Wiley took over the business when his father died in 1826. The firm was successively named Wiley, Lane & Co., and then Wiley & Putnam in 1838 as he partnered with George P. Putnam. In 1848 Putnam dissolved the partnership with Wiley and established his own publishing company. Wiley continued to publish as "John Wiley", then as "John Wiley & Son" (circa 1865; John's son Charles joined the company), and then as "John Wiley & Sons" in 1876 when John's second son William H.
