The Jockey Club
The Jockey Club, one of the most renowned Punk clubs in the mid-west from 1982-1988, resided in Newport, Kentucky. It's location of 633 York Street was originally a club for gambling called,The Flamingo Club, which was opened by Arthur Dennert in the late 1930s. The Jockey Club existed about the same time as The Flamingo Club, only at a different location. At some point, Hallman "Shorty" Mincy, owner of The Jockey, moved into The Flamingo Club and brought The Jockey Club name with him. In the 1960s, The Jockey Club became a teen dance club. In the 1970s, it became a classic rock venue. By 1982, it began booking Punk and Hardcore bands. The club was sold in 1988.
