Central, Michigan
Central Mine, also known simply as Central, was once home to over 1,200 residents and one of America’s most successful copper mines. It is located off US 41 in Keweenaw County in Michigan’s Upper Peninsula. Now a historic district, the site features original buildings and mining ruins. The mine itself was designated a Michigan State Historic Site in 1958, while the surrounding district was designated a Michigan State Historic Site in 1973. It was listed on the National Register of Historic Places in 1974.
