Leon Trotsky

Leon Davidovich Trotsky (Russian: Лев Давидович Троцкий) was a Russian revolutionary, Marxist theorist, and Soviet politician whose particular strain of Marxist thought is known as Trotskyism. He played a leading role in both the 1905, and the 1917 revolutions in Russia. He was the founder of the Red Army, and later, the left opposition which opposed the bureaucratism, and nationalism that was emerging under Stalin's leadership. For this activity, he was banished from the Soviet Union in 1929. After his banishment, he remained Stalin's most outspoken critic, and wrote many of his most important books. Trotsky was murdered by a GPU agent at his home in Mexico, in August 1940.
