His name at birth was Charles Henry Cannell, but he used various permutations.
When he enlisted in the Dragoons in November 1900 it was as Evelyn Henry Vivian. His age was given as 20 years and 2 when actually he was 18. He listed as next of kin Miss Olive Cannell, of Blackheath, Colchester. This is likely to have been his sister who was born in 1886 and so only 14 at the time.
In the 1911 census he appears as Evelyn Charles Vivian Cannell, occupation author (journalist). He was then living with his parents at Crown House Mucking Stanford Le Hope Essex, Mucking, Essex.
When he married Marion Christmas Harvie in 1913 he appeared in the marriages register as Charles H. Cannell. When their daughter Katharine Marion Louise was born in 1917 she was registered with the surname Vivian. In the 1939 register he is Evelyn Chas. Vivian, occupation - author, and the family was living at 3a Longridge Road, Kensington. His date of birth appears there as 21 October 1882, two days later than 19 October quoted in other sources.
Even in death, records show more than one name. Brompton Cemetery burial register lists him as Charles Henry Vivian, buried 27 May 1947. But the corresponding burial book lists him as Henry Charles Vivian. This document also gives the time of burial as 11:00, the undertakers as P.W. Ballard & Sons and a contact of Mrs Marion C. Vivian of 29 Bramham Gardens, SW5. The Greater London Burial Index (source Middlesex Burials & Memorial Inscriptions) lists him as Evelyn Charles Vivian.
