Carsten Niebuhr
German mathematician, cartographer and explorer who took part in the Danish Arabia Expedition in 1761-1767, sponsored by the Danish king Frederik V of Denmark. As the sole surviving member, he took responsibility for publishing the findings of the expedition, including a study of Cuneiform inscriptions, that was to become key in finally deciphering the Cuneiform alphabet.
