| Notes | Gentry was a unique quarterly magazine that was published from 1951 to 1957. Its objective was to influence the lifestyle of a sophisticated urban male and to make clothing a part of the fine art of living. Supporting its features on menswear of the day were articles on subjects such as art, history, philosophy and travel as well as short fiction pieces by leading authors. It also included a generous number of tipped-in fabric swatches, art objects and removable “pieces” to give tactility and dimension to an otherwise two-dimensional form. Gentry’s production techniques not only expanded the range of special effects but used the finest of printing, paper, and production materials. Gentry sold at two dollars a copy, when most magazines were twenty-five cents, purposely creating an allure for the affluent. |
