The framing "Story of King Shahriyar and His Vizier’s Daughter, Shahrazad," "The Story of the Merchant and the Genie," "The Story of the Fisherman and the Genie," "The Story of the Porter and the Three Women of Baghdad," and "The Story of the Three Apples" are found in a 14th century Syrian text of "The Thousand and One Nights." "The Story of Dalila the Crafty" is not found in the Syrian text, but was added to Egyptian texts. "The Story of Sinbad the Sailor" is found in a 17th century Turkish text of "The Thousand and One Nights. The stories in Part II, "Tales from French," originally appeared in Antoine Galland's French translation of "The Thousand and One Nights," adapted from stories told by Hanna Diyab. The stories in Part III, "Hanna Diyab Tales," are taken from notes by the French translator Galland recording tales told by Hanna Diyab. In Part IV, the excerpt from the Introductory Tale is taken from an the anonymous Grubb Street English translation of the Galland translation. |
