Folkets Bio is a non-profit cultural association that imports, distributes and displays films from all over the world. There are also festivals and activities that focus on putting the films in a context. The National Association also distributes films to other cinemas.
Folkets Bio was founded in 1973 by the film directors Stefan Jarl and Ulf Berggren to create viewing opportunities for Swedish films produced outside the major film companies and its counterparts in the world. In the beginning, they had major financial problems and were not allowed to advertise as a cinema in Dagens Nyheter. Nowadays, the organization is more anchored.
The association consists of a National Association, with headquarters at 39 Bergsund Strand in Stockholm, which owns the distribution company and various local departments that run the cinemas. The physical members are all members of the National Association and a local department. Each local department is a non-profit association of its own.
