| Notes | Criterion Collection blu-ray edition issued in a clear blu-ray case with a 26-page booklet. Copy Protected. Printed in USA. First printing 2009. The film is presented in its original aspect ratio of 1.33:1. To create this new high-definition digital transfer, the 35mm original cut negative was scanned in 2k resolution on a Northlight 2 Film Scanner and graded on a Baselight 8 Color Correction system under the supervision of original color timer Nils Melander. Thousands of instances of dirt, debris, and scratches were removed at Mars Motel in Stockholm using the Quantel IQ and Flame systems, and at Criterion in New York using the MTI Digital Restoration System and PFClean System. Presented in its original format, the soundtrack was remastered at 24-bit from a 35mm magnetic audio track. Special features on the disc include: an introduction by Ingmar Bergman, recorded in 2003; audio commentary by Bergman expert Peter Cowie (from the 1998 DVD edition), with a new afterword; "Bergman Island" (2006), an 83-minute documentary on Bergman by journalist Marie Nyreröd (also released as a separate title by Criterion - series number 477); archival audio interview with Max von Sydow; a 1989 tribute to Bergan by filmmaker Woody Allen; "Bergman 101", a selected video filmography tracing Bergman's career, narrated by Cowie; theatrical trailer; and, an essay by critic Gary Giddins in the booklet. |
