NotesWidely considered one of the most important and influential novels of the twentieth century. A work of modernist literature, incorporating various stylistic techniques including free indirect discourse, interior monologue (often referred to as "stream of consciousness") and other innovatory modes of writing. The narrative focuses on a single day in Dublin in June 1904 and follows three principal characters: Stephen Dedalus, Leopold Bloom and Molly Bloom. Its reputation as a difficult work of literature is only surpassed by Joyce's subsequent novel, Finnegans Wake. Because of its sexually explicit content it was initially banned in Ireland, Britain and the USA. It was privately published by Sylvia Beach in Paris from her bookstore, Shakespeare and Co.
