Alfred A. Knopf

Alfred A. Knopf began as an imprint of the publisher Alfred A. Knopf, Inc. which was founded in 1915. In 1960, Random House acquired Alfred A. Knopf, Inc. Over the years, the name Alfred A. Knopf has variously been used to denote an imprint or as a form of the publisher name. Random House was acquired by Bertlesmann in 1998. The registered business name Alfred A. Knopf, Inc. was dissolved on December 8, 1998. In late 2008 and early 2009, the Knopf Publishing Group merged with Doubleday to form the Knopf Doubleday Publishing Group. Random House has been owned since its 2013 merger of Penguin Group by Penguin Random House, a joint venture between Bertelsmann (53%) and Pearson PLC (47%). The name Alfred A. Knopf continues as an imprint and a publishing division of Knopf Doubleday.
