The Limited Editions Club

American publisher, founded in 1929 by George Macy (1900-1956) to publish well-made and illustrated editions of classics and a few carefully selected contemporary titles, often hand-signed by the illustrator. The books were originally limited to 1,500 copies. After George Macy's death, his wife Helen ran the company until 1968. From 1968 to 1970 the company was ran by their son Jonathan Macy and other family members. In 1970 the company was first sold to Boise Cascade Corporation, then to Ziff-Davis Publishing Company, who sold it to Cardavon Press. Cardavon raised the edition size to 2,000 copies. Sidney Shiff (1924-2010) acquired The Limited Editions Club from Cardavon in 1978, and gradually changed the focus, eventually producing only livres d'artiste. By 2004 the pressing size had been reduced to 300 copies, and the annual subscription price raised to $5,000. After Shiff passed away on March 18, 2010, his wife, Jeanne Shiff, became president of the company. Their last publication was in 2010, The Declaration of Independence. http://limitededitionsclub.com
